Power shortage of over 400 MW on Sunday Due to shut down of the Nathpa Jhakri plant
NEW DELHI: Several parts of the Capital on Sunday witnessed major power cuts lasting two to six hours as the city grappled with power shortage. Delhi faced a power shortage of over 400 MW because of less generation from Singrauli and Rajghat and shut down of the Nathpa Jhakri. Owing to the shutdown of the Nathpa Jhakri due to silting, the city did not receive 330 MW of power, while it lost out on another 107 MW from Rajghat and other power plants not working to their full capacity. Among the worst affected areas were South-West, West, Central, North and parts of South Delhi, where residents complained of power cuts through the day on Sunday. While the peak power demand was recorded at 3,399 MW, Delhi’s generation stood at 980 MW, with the States having to overdraw from the Northern Grid. “Rotational load-shedding has to be carried out to save the Northern Grid from collapse. Delhi’s neighbouring States are heavily overdrawing from the Grid, which itself is facing a severe shortage of power,” said sources in the Delhi Government’s Power Department. Naptha Jhakri, which supplies roughly 330 MW to the Capital, has been shutdown due to landslides and heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh.
