Eight houses raided at Madanpur Khadar near Sarita Vihar
NEW DELHI: In a joint operation conducted this past week, a BSES enforcement team along with the Central Industrial Security Force and the Delhi police unearthed over 150 kW of power theft from eight houses at Madanpur Khadar. “A 50-strong contingent of BSES, CISF and Delhi police personnel in the high theft prone area of Madanpur Khadar -- a colony in the vicinity of Sarita Vihar and Apollo Hospital -- unearthed the massive theft. Incidentally, as soon as the raiding team completed booking power theft cases in eight houses, a mob gathered and starting manhandling the team members and pelted stones, injuring a few officials,” said a BSES official. He said a First Information Report has been lodged against five persons at the Sarita Vihar police station. “Madanpur Khadar has around 40-50 houses -- each in turn having 30-50 rooms -- rented out to migrant workers for a monthly rent of Rs.1,500 to Rs. 2,000, which is inclusive of electricity charges. Incidentally, renting of rooms is the main occupation of the area. Each room is supplied with a 1-2 kW of un-metered power supply. Most of the houses in the area blatantly steal power from nearby BSES LV mains and even the ones that have a legal BSES connection, the connected load far exceeds the sanctioned load,” the official said. In the past few months, BSES enforcement teams have conducted over 50 raids at Madanpur Khadar, booking power theft of over 450 kW and slapping penalties of over Rs. 52 lakh. “As part of the exercise to minimise the incidence of power theft and improve the quality of its power supply at Madanpur Khadar, BSES is streamlining its distribution network using aerial-bunched insulated cables using the low voltage distribution system,” the BSES official said.
