‘Jalapatha Utsav’ attracts scores of tourists

CHAMARAJANAGAR: A large number of tourists participated in the “Jalapatha Utsav” which began at the Bharachukki Falls in Kollegal taluk on Saturday.

A fireworks show and music concerts were held in the evening near the falls.

Chittimela, Gorawara kunitha, and Siddappaji padavaibhav programmes enthralled the tourists.District in-charge Minister H.S. Mahadev Prasad, who inaugurated the utsav, said that efforts were on to develop the Bharachukki Falls at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore.

He said that amenities such as a bus shelter, visitors’ gallery, hanging bridge, tourist bungalow and hotels would be constructed at Shivanasumudra for the benefit of tourists.

He said 144 acres of land had been identified at Shivanasamudra for development.

Director of the Department of Tourism Somashekar said that the department had taken steps to develop tourist spots in the district.

He said that the State Government had allocated Rs. 140 crore for the development of the tourism sector. A blueprint had been prepared by architects to develop the Bharachukki Falls as an international tourist centre.

He said that the State Government had released Rs. 5 crore to establish a folklore study centre at M.M. Hills.

Speaking after inaugurating the special lighting arrangement, MP M. Shivanna said that he would persuade Union Tourism Minister Ambika Soni to take steps to release more funds to develop tourist spots in the district.

Earlier, Assistant Commissioner of Kollegal Sathyabhama offered “kalasha puja” to the Cauvery. Kollegal MLA Balaraj presided over the function.

Hanur MLA Parimala Nagappa, Deputy Commissioner Vishwanath Reddy, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat Jayaram, Deputy Conservator of Forests Raju, Kollegal Deputy Conservator of Forests Kumar Pushkar and zilla panchayat members participated in the function.
