Police suspect love triangle behind Greater Kailash case

Staff Reporter

FROM THE FAMILY ALBUM: Mona with husband Naveen in happier times.

NEW DELHI: Two days after 36-year-old fashion designer Mona Suri was set afire by two unidentified men outside her residence in the Capital’s upmarket Greater Kailash Part-II area, the Delhi police on Monday released a sketch of one of the suspects based on the victim’s statement.

The two young men had rung the door-bell around 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, and when Mona came out they sprinkled some inflammable liquid on her and set her ablaze.

The two then sped away on a motorcycle. The hapless victim, who sustained 80 per cent burns in the attack, is still battling for her life in Safdarjung Hospital.

Police investigations so far have not ruled out possibility of involvement of Mona’s husband Naveen Suri and an office colleague of his, Rachna.

According to the police, the two were in contact with each other over their mobile phones when Mona was attacked. Rachna is also being questioned by the police.

According to police sources, Mona and Naveen were apparently in love before they tied the knot in 1995. The two were getting along well until recently when Mona began suspecting that Naveen was having an affair with his colleague Rachna.

In an attempt to dig out the truth, Mona even threw a party on Naveen’s birthday this past April and invited Rachna as well. She closely observed the activities of Rachna during the party.

According to the police, Mona allegedly warned Rachna to stay away from her husband and even rang up Rachna’s father, threatening them with dire consequences. A month later, Mona allegedly consumed sleeping pills and was treated at a private clinic. The matter was not reported to the police.

According to police sources, Naveen took his wife along to Goa on a trip in the last week of July to assure her that his alleged relationship with Rachna was over. But the mobile phone records of the two purportedly show that both were in contact in Goa as well. The couple returned to Delhi from Goa on August 1.

Naveen went back to Goa a few days later only to return on Sunday morning after being informed of the ghastly attack on his wife.
