A collection of traditional Christian devotional songs, complete with western musical notations and guitar chords, will be released both in print and CD format on Wednesday. It was a labour of love for the six-member core team that went into the research and organisation of the collection, said Fr. William Nellikkal who coordinated the project over the last three years. The collection is being published by the Centre for Liturgical Music Documentation at the Cochin Arts and Communications under the Archdiocese of Varappuzha. The songs in the collection span the period between 1960s and early 70s and include works by eminent personalities like Job and George, K. K. Antony, Jerry Amaldev, Joseph Mankkil, Sheevolli Narayanan, Mathew Ulakamthara, Father Abel and Jacob Kallarakkal. There are a total of 120 hymns and they include the ever so popular ones like Vaava Yesunaada, Pavanaatmavam Daivame and Thedivarunnu . This collection is important, said Fr. Williams, because alterations have taken place in the way the music is used in different parts of the State. Putting it in black and white makes its authenticity being lost over the generations, he added. Besides, putting it in musical notations makes it easy for Malayalis in other parts of the globe to use these hymns. With the Western notations it becomes easy for the users all over the world because it is a universal language. The release of the collection will be at the Ashir Bhavan Auditorium on Wednesday. Daniel Acharuparampil, Archbishop of Varappuzha will release the collection. K.A. Martin
