Hopes of college takeover yet to materialise

Staff Reporter

It has more than 850 students and 80 per cent of them are tribals

BERHAMPUR: The ’Adivasi College’, Baliguda in Kandhamal district is awaiting takeover by the State Government for the past 17 years. It is the only college in the tribal-dominated Baliguda sub-division of the district, although it is being managed by a private management.

It has more than 850 students and 80 per cent of them are tribals. This college has drawn the attention of the UGC as well as NAAC. This tribal college at a remote place has been accredited by the NAAC with C+ grade. According to Susant Das, a lecturer of the college, recently UGC has sanctioned Rs 50 lakhss for the construction of hostels for tribal students. But similar measures are awaited from the State Government. This college was established in 1979 through private efforts. Hopes of its takeover by the State Education Department rose when in 1990 the State Government proposed to take over 10 colleges in tribal areas in the State.

In abeyance

This college was also in the list. But the proposal was kept in abeyance although many governments have changed in the state since 1990.

In 2006-07 the standing committee of the education department again mooted the proposal to take over these ten colleges and added up another college at Rajgangpur to the list. But the decision is yet to materialize.

But the college authorities have continued to upgrade the college without waiting for the government. It has now started self financing courses in Computer science, Information technology and Computer application for the benefit of tribal students living in this remote area.
