“Treat poor patients with empathy”

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Minister of State for Medical and Health, Bhawani Joshi, has called for extending the benefits of breakthroughs in ophthalmology to poor patients and treating them with empathy.

Addressing a State-level conference of the Rajasthan Ophthalmological Society in Banswara over the wekend, Mr. Joshi said the huge crowds often seen at special camps for eye operations were a clear indication of the extent of spread of cataract and other eye diseases. “A significant number of such patients spend their entire life with serious ailments,” he said.

Need for eye disease-free society’

Underlining the need to establish an eye disease-free society, the Minister expressed hope that ophthalmologists would devote their energy in the tribal-dominated Wagad region where people had to traverse long distances through difficult terrains to get basic medical care.

Among others, Mayur Mills executive director J.C. Laddha and three ophthalmologists, Ashok Kothari, Ajay Shourie and Navratan Jain, addressed the conference.
