NEW DELHI: A large number of Congress workers led by All-India Congress Committee secretary and Delhi MLA Jai Kishen held a demonstration at Town Hall here on Monday protesting against “attempts by the BJP to turn the Municipal Corporation of Delhi headquarters into its party office”. The protesters, who also burnt an effigy of the Mayor, said ever since coming to power in the MCD, the BJP had been trying to saffronise the place. ‘Going against norms’
Addressing the protesters, various leaders including Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar, Leader of Opposition in MCD Jai Kishan Sharma and former Mayor Satbir Singh charged that the BJP had been going against established norms by not inviting all the elected representatives to various MCD functions. ‘Unconstitutional’
Rather, they said, the BJP office-bearers were being invited to such functions which was “unconstitutional”. Citing a case in point, Mr. Jai Kishen said in his Sultanpur Majra constituency the inauguration of a tree plantation function of the MCD was recently done by the organising secretary of the Delhi BJP at the C-Block Park. He said efforts were made by the BJP to make it appear like a party function and the party flags were hung all over the place. And when some Congress workers protested, they were manhandled by BJP activists, he charged.
