Three killed, 12 injured in Kashmir grenade attack

Special Correspondent

SRINAGAR: Three people were killed and 12 injured in a grenade attack by militants on a crowded market in Nowpora area of Bandipore in north Kashmir.

Deputy Inspector General of Police B. Sirinivas told The Hindu that a grenade exploded on the road causing injuries to 15 and three of them died in hospital.” The condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical.

“It was a bad incident in which civilians were the target and we are ascertaining as to which organisation is behind the attack,” he said.

The attack comes a day after the police killed a Harkat-ul Mujahideen commander in the neighbouring town of Sopore. “Militants in north Kashmir are under tremendous pressure and under frustration they are now targeting civilians now,” the DIG said.

Following the attacks, security forces are on high alert to ensure an incident free Independent Day.

Bakhshi Stadium here is the main focus of unprecedented security as Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is scheduled to unfurl the Tricolour and take the salute. “Threat on this day has never been ruled out. We are taking necessary steps to thwart militant attacks,” said Farooq Ahmed, DIG of Central Kashmir range.

However, the tight arrangements have drawn flak from people due to intensified random checking of vehicles and frisking of civilians. All sensitive installations in the city have been brought under tight security cover.

Separatist and political groups have called for a strike on August 15.
