dated August 14, 1957: Statue removed

The statue of Lord Willingdon opposite the Government Transport House and near the Gymkhana Club on Mount Road, Madras, was removed late night on August 12. The statue was placed in a PWD lorry and taken to Fort Museum where it will be kept and preserved. The Madras Government had issued an order recently to remove the statue in connection with the centenary celebrations of the Independence struggle and before the ensuing Independence Day, August 15. Lord Willingdon was Governor of Madras from 1919 to 1924.
