NEW DELHI: Central and State employees, teachers and employees of State undertakings are to go on a nationwide strike on October 30 to protest against the Centre’s “anti-employee and anti-people” policies. This decision was taken at a national convention of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers and All India State Government Employees Federation here on Monday. Over 800 delegates, representing Central and State Government employees’ federations participated in it. The convention sought scrapping of the new contributory pension schemes, end downsizing operations and grant of right to strike to the trade unions. A resolution called upon the Government to stop contractual appointments, regularise casual and contingent employees and lift the ban on recruitment in the existing vacancies. The resolution also favoured an interim relief of a minimum of Rs. 1,000 to all Central and State Government employees and implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendation with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006. Abnormal high prices of essential commodities, merger of 50 per cent DA with basic pay and lifting the ban on compassionate appointments were some of the other issues discussed. Restoration of interest rates of the General Provident Fund and Employees Provident Fund to the earlier level was also discussed.
