Official to review literacy campaign

Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR: Belli Prakash, president of the Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat, has said that a senior official will be appointed to examine the quality of work undertaken under the total literacy campaign in the district.

Reviewing the progress of various departments under the Karnataka Development Programme here on Monday, Mr. Prakash said he had received several complaints that a school headmaster and the president of the School Development and Management Committee had colluded to misappropriate funds granted under this scheme.

H.M. Satish, president of the Standing Committee on Social Justice, who raised the issue, said that misuse of funds under this scheme was widespread. He said details of repairs undertaken in hospitals should be brought to the notice of the panchayat member of the area. The panchayat president directed the Joint Director of Agriculture to rectify mistakes in the implementation of the Harvesting Fields Scheme. He observed that complaints were being filed regarding funds being drawn under this scheme without following the guidelines of the Government.

He instructed the Executive Engineer of the engineering wing to start work immediately on the hostel for tribal students at Sringeri. He said the land for the hostel building had been identified.

K. Sundara Naik, chief executive officer of the panchayat, asked officials of the Social Welfare Department, Backward Classes and Minorities Department and the Integrated Tribal Development Department to prepare a list of students participating in the midday meal scheme. He asked the Department of Women and Child Welfare to provide details of schemes implemented for women.
