12 arrested with lethal weapons

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: Twelve persons were arrested on Monday and lethal weapons were seized from them when they were waiting to slay some of the accused in a double murder case.

Police sources said Kannan and Kumar from Azhaganaeri were killed by an armed gang of another community at Dharapuram on Tirunelveli– Adurai National Highway on last March 11 and the police arrested 21 persons in connection with the murder. Nine of them were booked under the provisions of Goondas Act.

When the remaining 12 accused were going to the court on Monday morning to attend the twin murder case trial, ten members of the opponent group, including Kannan’s father and village head, Esakki Pandian, had positioned themselves with weapons and a mini-lorry near the bridge on the North Bypass Road.

On information, a police force, led by the Deputy Commissioner (Law and Order), rushed to the spot and arrested two of them, including Esakki Pandian.
