Tamil Nadu
I have received BSNL’s bi-monthly bill dated August 7 for June-July pertaining to my telephone no. 276450. As per the bill, the gross metered calls for June were 285 and for July, 43. The free calls allowed for the two months were 50 and 43. As BSNL has been following the system of billing the subscribers bi-monthly and charging the rent accordingly, it will only be in the fitness of things if they allow free calls of 100 for any given two-month period instead of bifurcating free calls as is being done now. The prestigious industry that is ‘connecting India’ must shift its focus from ‘Advantage BSNL’ to a ‘people-friendly’ paradigm. Vengarai S. Raman, Thanjavur Gauge conversion work pending
Congratulations to the Indian Railways for completing the broad gauge conversion works in the Rameshwaram-Madurai section in a record time. The gauge conversion work in the Tiruvarur-Nagapattinam section is pending for a long time and I request the authorities to finish this project at the earliest. S. Baba, Thanjavur Shortage of rice at PDS
Initially, when the Tamil Nadu Government introduced the ‘Rs.2 per kilo rice’ scheme, a portion of entitled quantum was supplied in the kind of raw rice according to the needs of consumers. A minimal percentage of card holders are accustomed to having rice only. Besides, some families require it on special occasions such as Amavasya. Now, for the last some months, the stock reply from ration shops is “ no supply of raw rice,” compelling people to resort to purchase from the market at an exorbitant price. G. Vedarajan, Thanjavur Not paid salary
The employees of cooperative societies have not been paid their salaries for the last four months. Similarly, guest lecturers in government colleges, appointed on a contract basis on a salary of Rs.4,000, have not been sanctioned their pay. The employees, hailing from middle class families, have to grapple with sky rocketing prices of commodities and services. Will the authorities concerned look into their grievances and do the needful? R. Ramiah, Pudukkottai No information board
Though the Government ordered the display of information board, with the names, addresses, phone and fax numbers of State and district officials of the Vigilance and Anti-corruption Department, it has been carried out only in the Collectors’ offices and not elsewhere. Will the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister look into it and do the needful? R.S. Moorthy, Karur More buses needed
It is a pitiable sight to see hundreds of students, especially women and girls, waiting to board town buses at the Kumbakonam bus stand in the evening. I request the transport authorities to ply enough buses for the convenience of students during peak hours. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam
