ARIYALUR: Overcrowding of buses is a common sight on the Ariyalur-Kaikatti sector, a stretch of about 12 km. Not minding the risk it poses, passengers even dare to travel on the roof of the buses. In the absence of any share-autorickshaw facility, passengers bound for villages such as Wallajahnagaram, Rajiv Nagatr, Hasthinapuram, Venkatakrishnapuram, Periya Nagalur and V. Kaikatti, have to rely on the mofussil buses. All the buses bound for Kumbakonam, Lalgudi, Sripuranthan, T. Pazhuur, Jayamkondam and Andimadam are overcrowded.
Residents’ plea
Local residents said immediate steps should be taken for the operation of share-autorickshaws, to ease the congestion and ensuring safety for the passengers. The possibility of operating mini-buses should also be explored.
