B.S. Satish Kumar

BANGALORE: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is in the process of taking up collaborative research initiatives with U.S. universities and experts in the crucial areas of knowledge sciences, information and communication technologies, energy, environment, bio-technology, automotive field and aerospace. The programme might take off in November if everything goes according to plan.

Disclosing this to The Hindu in Bangalore, IISc professor S. Mohan, who is chairman of the alumni cell of the institute, said the industry majors from both the countries would be part of the research programme. Under this programme, scientists from U.S. universities would visit the IISc, while their counterparts in the IISc would go to universities and research institutes in the U.S.

There will also be an exchange of faculty and students. The IISc has finalised agreements with three of the 10 universities in California for the collaborative research programme. The Governor of California is expected to visit India during November to give a concrete shape to the programme, he said. Prof. Mohan said efforts would be made to hold meeting among the government and academic institutions as well as industries during the visit of the Governor to set the stage for making an announcement.
