Jacob meets State Congress leaders

Special Correspondent

His visit is primarily aimed at strengthening the party at all levels

Bangalore: All-India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Karnataka M.M. Jacob arrived here on Monday on a three-day visit to take stock of the political developments in the State vis-a-vis the Congress.

On arrival, he told presspersons that his visit was primarily aimed at strengthening the party at all levels, particularly in connection with the ensuing elections to the municipal bodies and several city municipal corporations.

Asked whether he would be meeting the former Prime Minister and national president of the Janata Dal (Secular) H.D. Deve Gowda in connection with forging an alliance between the two parties, Mr Jacob said he was not scheduled to meet Mr. Gowda.

Incidentally, the former Prime Minister is away at Madurai in Tamil Nadu over the past two days.

Several State Congress leaders including Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjuna Kharge, the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the KPCC office bearers led by the general secretary Prakash Rathod and a Tumkur district delegation led by the former MP G.S. Basavaraj called on Mr. Jacob at the Kumara Krupa Guest house where he is staying.

It was mentioned that several of them expressed their opposition to any alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular).
