Al-Qaeda threats not being taken lightly: police

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Stating that the reports of threats issued by the Al-Qaeda recently were not being taken lightly, Special Commissioner (Security) S.B. Deol said on Monday that arrangements had been made to ensure a peaceful Independence Day celebration in the Capital. In view of the heightened threat perception, the police, in coordination with the Central security and intelligence agencies, had chalked out a detailed plan for deployment in and around the Red Fort, from where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the nation. Mr. Deol said there were general inputs indicating that terrorist outfits were planning to target politicians and symbols of national importance here.

Accordingly, over 10,000 security personnel had been briefed about wanted militants, their roles and contingency plans.

Commandos from the Delhi Police, the Indo-Tibet Border Police and the National Security Guards would be deployed around the Red Fort. Quick Reaction Teams would be deployed at strategic locations. Patrolling had been intensified in sensitive areas and air-defence measures taken, besides the installation of closed-circuit television cameras for surveillance. Helicopters would be deployed for aerial reconnaissance during the celebrations, and more security personnel deployed at vital installations such as the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Parliament, railway stations, Metro stations, market places and cinema halls.
