“New generation PIOs should know their roots”

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Confederation of Indian Industry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) to organise the Know India Programme (KIP). The MoU aims at introducing the overseas Indian youth to the culture, heritage, history, economy and development of India, a press release issued by the CII said here on Monday.

The MoU was signed by G. Gurucharan, Joint Secretary, MOIA and Jayant Bhuyan, Deputy Director General, CII. The MoU aims at providing the youth more exposure to the latest developments in the economic and industrial scenario of India. It has been decided to organise KIPs in partnership with the CII and its youth wing, Young Indians.

As per the MoU, the CII and the MOIA will establish and maintain a website for the purpose involving a network of the overseas Indian youth.

‘Know India’

Presiding over the meeting, Vayalar Ravi, Minister, MOIA, said, “Know India Programme will focus on the Indian youth, born abroad to know their roots as the new generation is taking India all across the world.” The minister said that 176 candidates from 39 countries have confirmed their participation in the KIP.

KIPs are done in partnership with a State Government who hosts the participants in coordination with the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan.

The participants will have the opportunity to visit the States and understand the various facets of the rural India.

Mr. Ravi said that Mini Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) will be organised in New York on September 23. He said that Singapore has also approached the Ministry to organise a mini PBD with a focus on PIOs.
