COIMBATORE: The modified Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) for the textile sector is expected to be announced soon, according to the Textile Commissioner, J. N. Singh. He told presspersons here on Monday that by and large most of the suggestions given by the Ministry of Textiles had been accepted by the secretaries-level committee. “It will now go to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for approval.” He indicated that special emphasis was expected on certain sectors such as garments and technical textiles, which needed a greater push. The Ministry of Textiles would organise Texsummit 2007, a two-day event on August 31 and September 1 in New Delhi to deliberate on various issues of concern to the textile industry. This was an initiative of the Union Ministry of Textiles to have representatives from all segments of the textile industry, economists, academicians and political leaders on a single platform. Four working groups had been formed for the summit on textile inputs (physical framework), human resource development, policy framework on the role of government and market development. “The conference will provide an integrated platform to deliberate on efforts needed to boost exports, production and improving the market space for the Indian textile manufacturers.” Long-term issues such as labour, transaction cost and State-level levies would be highlighted at the discussions. Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, would participate in the valedictory function.
