Director Jayaraj had once toyed with the idea of releasing ‘Adbhutham’, which he shot in a record 2 hours and 44 minutes, along with another film. That is, two films for one ticket. “Since my film lasted just 76 minutes, I thought if there was another film of short duration, both could have been screened in one show, but despite the efforts I made, I couldn’t do it,” says the man who has made award-winning films like ‘Shantham’ and ‘Kaliyattom.’ Well, what Jayaraj couldn’t, Shaji N. Karun, another national award-winning filmmaker, has achieved with his film ‘AKG,’ part documentary, part feature on the life of A.K. Gopalan, one of Kerala’s most popular leaders ever. Shaji has released ‘AKG’ with ‘Thakarachenda,’ a feature film, which holds a mirror to a marginalised section of society. The film, directed by Avira Rebecca, contains brilliant performances by Sreenivasan and Geethu Mohandas. “I hope there are more ventures like this,” says Jayaraj. “This is an ideal way to take off-beat cinemas of shorter duration to the people.” P.K. Ajith Kumar
