Dharna seeks rollback of property tax hike
Correspondent
VIZIANAGARAM: CPI(M) workers on Tuesday staged a dharna at the Municipal Office demanding rollback of enhanced property tax. Party divisional secretary Reddy Sankara Rao said that the increase in taxes was between 100 and 570 per cent and this could be avoided if the municipality found alternative sources for generating income. He said the municipality, instead of collecting Rs. 2,500 for each km, allowed Hutch, Tata and Reliance companies to lay cables free of cost. That apart, the municipality had not been collecting taxes regularly from government offices, he alleged. He said the party would intensify stir if the hiked taxes were not withdrawn.
