ALAPPUZHA: With officials on a high alert to catch the Onam ‘spirit,’ the Cherthala Excise Circle, in separate raids on Monday and Tuesday, nabbed four persons and seized 1,400 litres of illicit spirit. They also seized 30 litres of illegally brewed arrack from one of the outlets. In the first of the raids on Monday, Excise sleuths arrested two persons, Udayan and Biju, who were allegedly smuggling 486 litres of spirit, concealed in cartons. On Tuesday, Excise officials seized 900 litres of spirit hidden in a lorry and arrested two persons who were taking the spirit from Chennai to Changanassery. Cases were also registered against five persons for bootlegging arrack. Thirty litres of arrack was seized from them.
