Lending an Ear: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy listening to the grievances of the Co-ordination Committee for Merchants Association members in Puducherry on Tuesday.
PUDUCHERRY: The Coordination Committee for Merchants Association has urged the Government to immediately take over the Chamber de Commerce and conduct election to appoint its office-bearers. The members called on Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at his chamber here on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum seeking Government intervention. The members appraised the Chief Minister about the recent High Court injunction making null and void the registration of the Chamber de Commerce as a society under the Societies Registration Act. The court, in its order on July 27 , also sought cancellation of the registration. The court had also given a direction to the Government “to take over the management of properties in public interest pending disposal of the writ petition, and thus, render justice.” The court also directed the Government to draw the electoral list eligible to take part in the elections. In the light of the court verdict, the members asked the Government to immediately take over the property and conduct elections. They said the last election to the Chamber de Commerce was held in 1969. There tenure came to an end by 1975. However, a few members continued their tenure and conducted the affairs of the chamber in violation of the rules Governing it. The committee members told the Chief Minister that though there was no elected body, the business transactions of the chamber, including renting out the buildings, was conducted by the group.
The members said they got an assurance from the Chief Minister that the court order would be implemented.
