HYDERABAD: The Nagarjunasagar Ayacut Parirakshna Samiti, which undertook a three-day 110-km padayatra from the Velugonda project (Prakasam district) to District Collectorate in Ongole seeking a Godavari-Thungabhadra rivers’ li nk project, pressed for it on Tuesday. K. V. Nagendra Reddy, president, R. Mahananda Choudary, former MLA and environmentalist K.Purshotham Reddy told a press conference here on Tuesday that following the completion of the padayatra re presentatives of the Samiti had called on Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy in the morning. They presented a memorandum to Dr. Reddy stating a cost-effective plan to link the rivers by constructing two major dams on the Godavari along with a few barrages on the river and the Krishna. The project along with implementation of some lift irrigation schemes would lead to a sustainable development of the entire State, they said. They stated that Dr. Reddy had asked the Samiti representatives to discuss the project’s feasibility with engineers concerned. The Samiti leaders recalled that some non-resident engineers living in the US had formed a forum which mooted the river link, inspired by the jalayagnam programme. Dr. Reddy had asked them to meet him here and gave an assurance to consider the project.
