Court took note of kidney racket in 2004
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court had way back in 2004 taken judicial note of the alleged racket in kidneys and directed the then Director-General of Police to look into all files relating to donation of kidneys and find out how many donors were from Ramanagaram and surrounding areas.
The court was then dealing with a petition filed by S. Maligamma, by a resident of Holalu village in Hadagalli taluk of Bellary district. The resident had challenged the refusal by the Authorisation Committee for Transplant of Human Organs on August 17, 2004 to permit kidney transplant.
The petitioner said although the donor was not related to her, the kidney was being donated only due to “love and affection”. She had said that money was not being offered as an enticement to the donor to give up a kidney.
A Single Judge had then directed the police to investigate complaints of kidney sale in and around Ramanagaram in Bangalore district and submit a report within two months. The police, it appears did not undertake such an exercise as the single judge order was stayed by a Division Bench.
