Contractors’ bodies boycott tenders

Officials criticised for not giving payment dates

Officials say Government will look for other ways

ALAPPUZHA: Members of the All Kerala Government Contractors Association (AKGCA) and the Kerala Government Contractors Association (KGCA) in the district on Tuesday boycotted the tenders called for executing maintenance works on National Highway 47 from Aroor to Krishnapuram.

The boycott was announced by representatives of both associations, who said the decision was taken since officials did not have a clear idea when the money for the works would be given to the contractors.

24 projects

“The Government had ordered for maintenance works through 24 projects for Rs.1.3 crore on this 96 km stretch of NH 47 and sanctioned Rs.40 lakh. However, the executive engineer used the money to purchase tar for the works and is not able to tell us clearly when the rest of the money will come or when we will be paid if we take up these works,” AKGCA district secretary Santosh Babu said.

In stir mode

G. Viswambharan of the KGCA said the contractors, though they had earlier decided to stop all works till August 16, had come forward for the tender process since the works were of utmost importance. However, even then, the officials were not able to give even a possible date for the payments.

The associations were already on an agitation since payments for various works were pending.

Meanwhile, the officials said the Government would look for other ways to execute the projects. The boycott would not be allowed to affect the projects, they said.
