TUNGABHADRA DAM SITE: The Government will constitute a new committee to look into the demands for reorganisation of districts and the formation of new taluks/districts, according to M.P. Prakash, Minister for Home, Law and Parliamentary Affairs. Responding to questions from presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that there have been demands from people in various districts for carving out new taluks and districts. The Government intends to form the new committee, (the fourth one after the Vasudeva Rao, the Hundekar and the Gaddigoudar committees), after the Commission on Delimitation of Assembly/Parliament Constituencies issued its final notification. The delimitation commission, he said, has issued a stay not to effect any changes in the existing boundaries of the districts until the final notification was published by it. “Immediately after the final notification is issued, the Government will initiate steps to form the new committee to consider the demands/elicit their views on creating new taluks and districts. Based on the committee’s recommendation, the Government will take a decision,” he said. Mr. Prakash reiterated that the modernisation of the Tungabhadra canals would be taken up once the ongoing works on the canals of the Bhadra Project was completed. He said that the overflowing Tungabhadra has brought smiles on the faces of farmers and hoped that the post-monsoon season would also be equally good so that adequate water was available for the rabi crop. ‘White elephant’
Mr. Prakash said that the Tungabhadra Board, which is overseeing the release of water in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as per the allocation made, had become a “white elephant”. He said that it should be scrapped. “Why should there be a board just to monitor the release of water already allocated?” he asked. Funds for police
Later, speaking after laying the foundation stone for a modern police station at Chitawadigi in Hospet town, Mr. Prakash said that the coalition Government had been taking steps, including the release of adequate funds, for improving infrastructure for the Police Department. Advice
He appealed to the people to understand the stress and strain that the police personnel undergo while discharging their duties. One of the reasons for this was the inadequate staff position in the department, he said. He wanted the people to adhere to the law and also discharge their responsibilities to society instead of blaming the police personnel for everything that happened. He said that the Government had decided to enhance the various allowances to the police personnel. He will announce them in about a week. H.R. Gaviyappa, Hospet MLA, presided over the function. Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, welcomed the gathering. D.C. Rajappa, Additional Superintendent of Police, proposed a vote of thanks.
