The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in an Independence Day message to the nation, said that the transition from political to economic emancipation necessarily called for “determined effort and sacrifice of personal comfort” for the sake of the nation’s good. “The testing time has come and India looks to each one of our citizens to do his or her duty honestly and conscientiously in this hour of trial,” he said. “This day is an occasion for national rejoicing. Let everyone feel happy, cheerful and buoyant. I wish you all the best of luck and greater happiness and prosperity in the coming year.”
