Editors Guild condemns attack
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Editors Guild of India on Tuesday condemned the “barbarous attack” on the office of the Outlook in Mumbai by Shiv Sena men in protest against depiction of party leader Bal Thackeray as a vill
ain in its Independence Day special issue.
In a statement, the Guild demanded that the Maharashtra Government provide protection to the magazine and also initiate legal action against those who perpetrated the attack. Of the view that the Shiv Sena, too, should take action against its members who indulged in the vandalism, the Guild urged civil society to mobilise itself to protect the freedom of expression “which was sought to be undermined in Mumbai.” The mob took the law into their hands by ransacking the office and threatening the staff members, the Guild said. “The threats issued to the magazine that the members of the Shiv Sena would again attack the news magazine’s offices is a direct attack on the freedom of the press, especially in a democratic set-up where political parties are duty-bound to eschew violence.”
