Struggle to get freedom fighters’ pension
Jabalpur: Ishwaridas Thakur, 90, who spent eight years (1941-49) in jail for taking part in the Quit India Movement, has moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court after his previous attempts to avail himself of the freedom fighters’ pension proved futile.
Mr. Thakur, a resident of Sagar district, moved the court, which on August 4 directed the Union Home Secretary, the State Chief Secretary and the District Collector to take a final decision on the issue within two months. His two sons had died of malnutrition and he was unable to treat his wife who was suffering from a serious breathing problem as the veteran freedom fighter who was a member of the Azad Hind Sena had no major source of income.
He was honoured with a citation but was denied the pension despite an amendment to the rules. His second application in this regard is awaiting a decision since 1980. — PTI
