Guruprasad, Ruth take honours

BANGALORE: D. Guruprasad, who is on a comeback trail, and Ruth Mishra won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively in the M.S. Ramaiah memorial State-ranking badminton championship which concluded at Prakash courts here on Tuesday.

The results (all finals): Men’s singles: D. Guruprasad bt Aditya Prakash 21-18,21-17. Doubles: Vineet Manuel & Arun Vishnu bt D.Guruprasad & Abhijith Naimpally 21-16,21-18.

Women’s singles: Ruth Misha bt Monisha Vinayak 21-18, 21-12. Doubles: Ruth Misha & Saumya Padhye bt G.M. Nischita & V.B.Varsha 21-6, 21-7.
Sachin scores the winner

Kodava Samaj defeated Bellary Hockey Club 1-0 in the ‘C’ division league tournament here on Tuesday. Sachin (38th) scored the match winner.

In another match, MICO and Young Stars (Hubli) played out a goalless draw.
Bangalore MS prevails

Bangalore Military School beat St John’s HS 3-0 in the G.S. Randhawa memorial inter-school hockey tournament conducted by Rotary Club of Indiranagar. Vivek Singh (11th & 38th) and Vikas Kalkal (31st) scored.

In another match, Sports School (Kudige) beat Army School (ASC) 2-1 in a last league phase fixture. Anil (23rd) and Rakesh (46th) scored for Sports School, while Chandan Aind (38th) scored for ASC.
Vivekananda College scores wins

Vivekananda College registered twin victories at the State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Tuesday.

Vivekananda defeated St. Joseph’s Commerce College 25-18, 25-23 and later scored a 25-14, 25-13 win over CMS Bangalore.

Other results: NSAMC bt SRN Adarsha College 25-14, 25-14; Al Ameen bt Sambram 25-12, 25-7; BHS bt Carmel 25-13, 25-22; Al Ameen bt SRN Adarsha 25-6, 25-12; Vijaya College bt CMS Bangalore 25-10, 25-17.
St. Philomena’s FGC triumphs

St. Philomena’s FGC, Mysore, last year’s runner-up, emerged winner this time with a 7-0 win over defending champion Post Graduate Sports Council, Manasagangothri (PGSC) in their final super-league encounter in the Chief Justice Hombegowda Memorial Gold Cup inter-collegiate football tournament at the University ground in Mysore on Tuesday.

St. Philomena’s FGC and Vidya Vardhaka FGC ended their super-league engagements with seven points, but the former’s better goal-average of eight against the latter’s five helped it clinch the title.

R. Joseph scored three goals for the winner (10th, 36th and 47th minutes). The other scorers were Asim (21st), G. Isacc (42nd) and Shahboll (49th & 55th). VVFGC took the runner-up spot, while JSS (Ooty Road) finished third.
Sharada wins title

The winners in higher primary, high school, pre-university and college sections of the Independence Cup football tournament organised by the Dakshina Kannada district football association would be decided at the Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on Wednesday. Sharada (Mangalore) beat Badria (Mangalore) 1-0 in the lone final of the day in the primary school section played here on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, NIT-K blanked Joyland High School (Mangalore) and Cascia High School (Jeppu, Mangalore) by an identical 2-0 margin in the league for high school girls. Joyland grabbed the second spot in the three-team event beating Cascia HS in a tie-breaker 2-0 after both teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time

Supreeth shocks Prajwal

Local lad and unseeded S.D. Supreeth Dev played with a purpose and impressed with his consistent returns from the baseline to register an upset win over his younger brother and fourth seed S.D. Prajwal Dev 7-6(8), 7-5 to enter the quarterfinals in the boys’ under-16 singles of the Karnataka State ranking junior tennis tournament (for under-14 and under-16 boys and girls) in Mysore on Tuesday.
