St. Philomena’s FGC, Mysore, last year’s runner-up, emerged winner this time with a 7-0 win over defending champion Post Graduate Sports Council, Manasagangothri (PGSC) in their final super-league encounter in the Chief Justice Hombegowda Memorial Gold Cup inter-collegiate football tournament at the University ground in Mysore on Tuesday. St. Philomena’s FGC and Vidya Vardhaka FGC ended their super-league engagements with seven points, but the former’s better goal-average of eight against the latter’s five helped it clinch the title. R. Joseph scored three goals for the winner (10th, 36th and 47th minutes). The other scorers were Asim (21st), G. Isacc (42nd) and Shahboll (49th & 55th). VVFGC took the runner-up spot, while JSS (Ooty Road) finished third. Sharada wins title
The winners in higher primary, high school, pre-university and college sections of the Independence Cup football tournament organised by the Dakshina Kannada district football association would be decided at the Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on Wednesday. Sharada (Mangalore) beat Badria (Mangalore) 1-0 in the lone final of the day in the primary school section played here on Tuesday. Earlier on Monday, NIT-K blanked Joyland High School (Mangalore) and Cascia High School (Jeppu, Mangalore) by an identical 2-0 margin in the league for high school girls.
