Justice Sathasivam’s appointment cleared

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil has cleared the appointment of Justice P. Sathasivam, senior-most Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

Sources in the Law Ministry told The Hindu that the President signed the file on Monday and the warrant of appointment would be issued in two days after the completion of medical examination.

Mr. Justice Sathasivam (58), the number two judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, will have a tenure of about seven years as a judge of the apex court. He is likely to be the Chief Justice of India for over a year from 2013.

Normally, a chief justice of a High Court is appointed a judge of the apex court. As an exception, Mr. Justice Sathasivam has been considered for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Mr. Justice Sathasivam hails from an agricultural family in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. He was initially appointed a permanent judge of the Madras High Court in January 1996 and shifted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in April this year.

During a span of little over 11 years as a Judge of the Madras High Court, Mr. Justice Sathasivam had disposed of 36,550 main cases and 50,708 miscellaneous cases.

He had disposed of a large number of habeas corpus petitions besides several batch of writ petitions relating to motor vehicles, taxation, mines and minerals, land acquisition, labour and service laws.

As an Executive Chairman of Puducherry Legal Services Authority, he organised several lok adalats and settled more cases by way of negotiation. He spread the message of compulsory registration of marriages.
