NEW DELHI: Shot putter Saurabh Vij finished 12th with a throw of 17.96 metres as the athletics programme came to an end in the World University Games in Bangkok on Tuesday. In a field of 19 in the final — without the qualification round — Vij opened with a foul, had a 16.81 next and then hauled himself from the 15th to the 12th position with his third-round effort of 17.96m. Only the top eight went through to the last three rounds. Vij had recorded a personal best of 18.51m, while winning the gold in the Asian Grand Prix meet in Pune last June while he finished sixth at the recent Asian championships in Amman with 17.49m. Russian Max Sidorov, with a second-round throw of 20.01m claimed the gold, while Latvian Maris Urtans (19.38) and Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ming-Huang (19.36), the Asian silver medal winner, took the silver and bronze. In swimming, Pooja Ghorpade timed 2:37.92 while finishing last in her heat in the women’s 200m butterfly event. In the women’s 100m breast-stroke event, M.S. Vidya was second in 1:24.48 in the two-woman field that featured heat 1. Prajakta Khangan took the third place in her heat in the women’s 50m freestyle event in 31.62 seconds. In the men’s 50m breast-stroke, Sandeep Sejwal timed 30.39 for the second place in heat 2.
