KOLLAM: Kulwinder Singh of Punjab and A.B. Manju of Kerala cornered all the attention with their record-breaking efforts even as Railway men and Kerala women inched closer to the team titles on the penultimate day of the 33rd men and 25th women Senior National powerlifting championships at the Bharatha Rajni Parish hall here on Tuesday. Kulwinder won the gold, breaking the existing record in bench press in the 100kg weight category. Kulwinder’s 215-kg effort in his third attempt erased V. Remash’s mark of 212.5kg set in 2005. However, the star of the day was Kerala’s A.B. Manju, the former strong woman of India, who set new marks in total, bench press and dead lift in the 60kg category. Manju, the current national record holder in total lift in 56kg, was the overwhelming favourite to win the gold in 60kg class. Clear favourite
Facing little opposition, Manju helped herself to three records and left her indelible mark in 60kg. She killed the competition by lifting 190kg in squat and established a 35kg lead over her nearest rival. The Alappuzha-based lifter broke B. Tejaswani’s Naidu’s one-year-old record (475kg) in total with a combined lift of 486kg. She shattered the seven-year-old record of G. Rajarajiswari in bench press with an effort of 103.5kg. In dead lift, Manju erased Mandeep Kaur’s five-year-old record. There were no surprises in women’s 67.5 kg and 75kg weight categories where Mandeep of Punjab and K.L. Lekha of Kerala won gold medals without much fuss. At the end of the competition on the fourth day, Railways leads the points tally in the men’s section with 69 points followed by Andhra Pradesh (37).
