NEW DELHI: Defending champion P. Hari Krishna maintained his half-a-point lead after a short but violent draw with local Ferenc Berkes in the eighth round of the Gyorgy Marx memorial chess tournament at Paks, Hungary, on Monday. The 27-move deadlock in Queen’s Gambit took Hari’s aggregate to five points. Peter Acs joined Viktor Korchnoi and Csaba Balogh at 4.5 points after beating China’s Hou Yifan. Hari plays white against the Chinese girl in the ninth and penultimate round. Tania Sachdev finished seventh in the 10-player Paks Cup Grandmasters tournament played simultaneously. In the ninth and final round, the National women’s champion drew with second seed and eventual runner-up Romania’s Vladislav Nevednichy to tally 3.5 points. Hungary’s third seed Attila Grozpeter (seven points) won the title in style by beating Australia’s David Smerdon.
