HAVERI: The Haveri Police unearthed a tea adulteration racket in Haveri on Tuesday. Four persons including two tea merchants have been arrested in connection with the case. The police gave their names as Sanjay of Melpet, Bhavani of Gadagina Oni in Haveri and Chinnappa and Manjunath, who worked for Sanjay. Goods worth Rs. 11 lakh and three vehicles were confiscated. Superintendent of Police G. Ramesh went to the tea depot posing as a customer on Tuesday morning and ordered arrest of the accused. Mr. Ramesh told The Hindu over phone that the accused to procure very low quality tea from Kunnur, Kochi and other places, which came in bags of 40 kg. This tea was mixed with coloured wood dust and other ingredients, he said. The a ccused had brands such as Top Tea, Gajanana, Murugan, Hotel Dust Tea, Star and Mayur. The police seized 57 bags of tea worth Rs. 3 lakhs from Bhavani, from whom a van and a two-wheeler were also seized. As many as 350 bags of tea powder were seized from Sanjay. A tempo was also seized.
