Rise above vested interests, Councillors told
CHANDIGARH: Emphasising that the law is paramount, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S.F. Rodrigues on Tuesday impressed upon Chandigarh Mayor Harjinder Kaur and municipal councillors to rise above vested interests and personal priorities and expand their reach to the common man. “If you love Chandigarh, make it a truly great city. Let us strengthen our partnership and build up a system for speedy redress of common grievances of our citizens concerning civic services”, he said inaugurating a community centre in Sector 42 here. He said that it was “our collective responsibility to follow the rule of law and provisions in the Municipal Act” and there should be no discretion, or preferential treatment to anyone. Municipal Governance must be more responsive, accountable and transparent, he added. Gen Rodrigues said the Chandigarh Administration had undertaken various societal endeavours in all fields including health, education, child abuse, reduction in maternal mortality and rehabilitation of slums in a phased manner. He urged the municipal councillors to extend their participative and pro-active role in all these programmes. The Mayor said that Chandigarh had emerged as a multi-lingual and multi-cultural city with ideal and healthy living conditions. Chandigarh Home Secretary Krishna Mohan and Municipal Commissioner P. S. Aujla also spoke on the occasion.
