‘Ground’ for all celebrations

S. Harpal Singh

ADILABAD: Adilabad’s Police Parade Grounds, which has remained out of focus for half-a-century, continues to be associated with local ethos. It has hosted many cultural events of importance during the last 50 years.

History

The stone for this always well-maintained ground was laid on October 29, 1956, by the then Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Safdar Hussain of the Hyderabad Police Service. This was a couple of days before the State of Hyderabad merged with other Telugu speaking areas of the former Madras presidency on November 1.

The ground came into being in 1957 apparently hosting its first parade and celebration on the Independence Day that year. Since then, it has been regularly hosting the official Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations.

“The ground was an inseparable part of the district Armed Reserve Police headquarters that was founded with three platoons initially” recalls senior-most AR Sub Inspector Rasheed Ali Khan.
