HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners’ Association and its affiliated organisations decided to call off their indefinite strike called from the midnight of Tuesday following fruitful discussions with the Transport department on 14 demands. Its main demand to release a transport vehicle involved in an accident at the police station, and not in court as proposed, was conceded. Transport Commissioner Ajay Misra, Additional Commissioner T. Krishna Reddy and Joint Commissioner C.L.N. Gandhi took part in the discussions. The Government agreed to the five demands of the transporters. Mr. Gandhi told The Hindu that nine other demands would be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. He said orders on release of goods carriers involved in accidents at the police stations concerned after verificatio n were already issued on Monday. The Government also agreed to provide tax remission for a transport vehicle during its seizure by a court or if it was under major repair after an accident. There would be no fixing of speed governors for lorries and no tax would be collected by the Transport department. The other demand pertained to prevention of overloading in goods vehicles. Gopal Naidu, president, Eswar Rao, general secretary of the association and its other office-bearers Samson, Anji Reddy, Durga Prasad and Sammi Reddy, and Syed Habeeb Ali, president, South Regional Lorry Owners’ Association, also participated in the talks.
