Melbourne: One of Australia’s largest events showcasing the best of Indian culture has been launched in Sydney to mark the 60th Indian Independence Day celebrations in that country. The opening ceremony of the India-Australia Friendship Fair was attended by prominent personalities including cricketer Brett Lee, Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews and New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma. Best of Indian culture
The event is expected to attract around 25,000 visitors, according to the organiser of the event, United Indian Associations. A similar event had attracted only 250 persons in 1994, but since then it has grown manifold to become one of Australia’s largest cultural events. 100-odd stalls
The United India Association is the apex body representing 18 Indian community organisations in the country. The 100-odd stalls at the fair offer “all that one needed to know about Indians in Australia,” it said. Australia has over the years seen a significant increase in the number of immigrants, students and short-term visitors from India. — PTI
