Sonia Gandhi hails agreement, Manmohan

NEW DELH: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his team on accomplishing the 123 agreement after tough negotiations and endorsed it stating that it “fulfils all the assurances” that the Prime Minister had given repeatedly in Parliament.

“The objectives of technological self-reliance and national sovereignty have been and will continue to be fully protected. I congratulated our Prime Minister and his team for this accomplishment. We are a democracy and differences in views are inevitable but informed debate and discussion are the answer,” Ms. Gandhi said, addressing the general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party here.

Ms. Gandhi said that unlike in the past when debates and discussions in Parliament stirred up the entire nation, today disruptions and sloganeering appeared to have taken over. She cited the disruption of the Prime Minister’s speech . Ms. Gandhi directed party MPs to play an active role in communicating to the public the background to the agreement and the benefits that would accrue to India from it.
