SIO stages silent protest

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: Udupi district unit of Student Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India staged a silent demonstration in front of the Service Bus Stand here on Tuesday demanding freedom of education for all.

The protest was a part of State-wide agitation launched by the organisation. The convener of the Udupi district unit of SIO, Mohammad Iftikar; former convener Hussain Kodibengre; president of Udupi unit Zia-ur-rahman; and president of Malpe unit Shoaib were present.

A press release issued on the occasion said commercialisation of education was rampant. Only six per cent students had access to higher education. Nearly half the population was illiterate. Education had become the exclusive preserve of well-to-do.

Too much importance was being given to the IT and BT sectors.Farmers were getting poorer. The country should have an integrated and balanced education policy, the release added.
