KOCHI: A meeting convened by the Kochi Corporation on Tuesday decided to set up decentralised waste treatment plants at 10 separate locations in the city based on a project conceived by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) in keeping with the concept of ‘zero waste on the ground’ being promoted by the corporation. The meeting was convened under the aegis of the project secretariat cell set up by the Corporation exclusively for the implementation of decentralised waste management. The meeting decided to launch a pilot project at Ravipuram, Mayor Mercy Williams said. “Funds for the project will taken from the Plan fund of the corporation,” Ms. Williams said. Reportedly, the corporation authorities were aiming at piloting the project on October 2 coinciding with the cleanliness drive in connection with Gandhi Jayanthi. The project would be extended to the remaining nine places on the basis of the success of the pilot project, sources said. Cusat was asked to fine-tune the project. Kudumbasree would be the nodal agency for the project, while Cusat would provide the technical guidance and other requisite inputs. Cusat would also educate and create awareness about the operation of the project. Members from the Kudumbasree units would be deployed for collection and segregation of waste. A monitoring committee would be set up at divisional levels to evaluate the implementation of the project.
