President’s Medals for 34 Delhi policemen

Special Cell bags twenty-one gallantry awards

NEW DELHI: The President’s Police Medals for gallantry, distinguished and meritorious services have been conferred on 34 Delhi Police officers and personnel on Independence Day this year.

Contribution

The Special Cell of the Delhi police has bagged 21 gallantry awards for contribution in counter-terrorism operations and for action against criminal elements.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Kumar Yadav and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma have been awarded the medal for exemplary display of professionalism during an encounter with an alleged Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad militant, Shahid Gafoor, on February 4 night. Three more Jaish militants were arrested in that operation and a huge cache of explosives and ammunition was seized.

Inspector Sanjay Dutt and Head Constables Satender Kumar and Hansraj have been given the award for their contribution in a major operation in which three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, Shahnawaz, Shakiq Ali and Shams, were gunned down and five others were arrested in March 2005.

According to a Delhi Police release, Inspector Subhash Vats, Sub-Inspector Harender and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjeev Lochan of the Special Cell have been conferred the President’s Police Medal for gallantry for their contribution in an encounter in which a top LeT militant, Ghulam Yajdani, and a Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (Bangladesh) militant, Ahsan Ullah Hasan, were gunned down in March last year.

Inspectors Kailash Bisht, Lalit Mohan Negi, Hriday Bhushan and S.K. Giri, Sub-Inspectors Rajender Sehrawat, Devender Kumar, Girish Kumar, Sajjan Singh and Kailash Yadav, and Head Constables Bijender Kumar, Sanjeev and Vinod Gautam of the Special Cell have also been conferred the medal.

The Police Medal for Distinguished Service has been conferred on V. Renganathan. Assistant Commissioner of Police Harish Chandra Joshi, Inspectors Indra Sharma, Jaspal Singh and Surender Kumar, Sub-Inspectors Himmat Ram, Ramji Lal Sharma, Ramesh Chand, Chandra Narain Jha and Azad Singh Dahiya, and Assistant Sub-Inspectors Ram Niwas, Ikpal Singh and Ved Pal Singh have been conferred the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Meritorious Service

Two officers of the Bureau of Police Research and Development -- M.K.Sudarsanan and Dhani Ram -- have been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
