Prevent encroachment of lakes response

In response to the Public Eye articles on privatisation of lakes (August 8, 2007), Laxmeesha Acharya of Ambalipura Village, says: While the government has taken some initiative on the Bellandur Lake and is treating the water released into it from the nearby industries, I am worried about the extent of encroachment of the lake. The lake is surrounded by a vast area of green land, mostly waste land that is used by farmers to graze their cattle.

On the other side of the Sarjapur Road is Iblur lake, which was a few years ago cleaned by some company and ever since the water level has never been the same. While it will be good to see a green cover built on this land, it does not necessarily have to be given to private bodies for maintenance. All that the government has to do is to prevent the encroachment and to plant trees.

Safety clauses

G.S. Narayanan of 4th T Block, Jayanagar, says: The articles are timely. All Government bodies, including the Lake Development Authority, are neither responsible nor accountable to what they do. So it is better to think of public-private partnership for all lakes/development works. Putting in some safety clauses in the MoU will serve our purpose.
