Cases against tribals withdrawn

HYDERABAD: As a kindly gesture on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Independence, the State Government has decided to withdraw cases filed by police against tribals in Khammam, East and West Godavari districts in connection with their clashes with non-tribals over lands.

The Government has also decided to scrap the cases that the police filed in the tribal areas in these districts citing girijans as “naxalite sympathisers” for offering food or shelter to extremists.

Announcing this after a meeting with Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Tuesday, Home Minister K. Jana Reddy said the Rajasekhara Reddy Government, soon after coming power, had scrapped a number of such cases following a policy decision. However, some cases were left out at that time.

These cases which were now in different stages of trial before the courts, would be scrapped.
