Veteran journalist dead

Chennai: Rm T Sambandam, former editor of Dinamani, died at his residence in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 73. He had been battling cancer.

Beginning his career in Tamil Nadu, launched by Karumuthu Thiagaraja Chettiar in Madurai, he joined the Indian News Service launched by Ramnath Goenka as a reporter.

He later joined the Indian Express in Chennai and rose to become its Chief of Bureau.

Making a transition back to Tamil journalism in the 1990s, Mr. Sambandam took over as Deputy Editor and then Editor of Dinamani, the Tamil daily of the Express group which he served till 2004.

His journalistic career of five decades was marked by a deep concern for social issues, notably public health, education and welfare of youth. Mr. Sambandam also worked actively to defend freedom of the press.

As per his last wish, the body was donated to Sri Ramachandra University, Porur, to aid medical studies and research.

The eyes were donated to Rajan Eye Care Hospital, T. Nagar. He is survived by his wife.
