Deshmukh has promised action in riots cases: Sonia

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi, addressing the general body meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Party, said that efforts should be made to intensify the legislative agenda.

She pointed out that for the first time a Bill on social security for workers in the unorganised sector would be introduced. “This is truly a landmark and, like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, it is in keeping with one of the key pledges of our manifesto.”

She underlined that some crucial commitments made in the Common Minimum Programme still remained to be translated into reality. She referred in particular to the need to operationalise the Right to Education. Referring to the Srikrishna Commission report on the Mumbai riots cases, Ms. Gandhi said she had discussed it with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who promised that definite action would be taken on its findings and that administrative action would not be discriminatory.

Elections

She reminded the party members that in the next few months Gujarat would go to the polls and thereafter Assembly elections would be held in another four States.

The party planned to hold a national convention of all District Congress Committees followed by a series of regional conventions. On the targeting of Hindi-speaking people by militants in Assam, she said the Centre and the State were open for a dialogue “but such senseless acts of violence must be dealt with firmly.”
