GOOD ENCOUNTER: Vishesh Batia prevailed over Teja Shakulkar in three sets.

Chennai: Fifth seed Vishesh Batia of Gujarat and the seventh seed, Maharashtra’s Mansingh Athare, registered victories in the boys’ under-18 second round at the adidas-MCC junior National tennis championship here on Tuesday.

Vishesh powered his way through the first set against Teja Shakulkar (Maharashtra) before he was stifled in the second. After falling short in a close tie-break, the fifth seed found his bearings to win 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2.

Mansingh, who manoeuvred Andhra Pradesh’s Ankesh Bhargava around to his advantage and had little trouble with his placement, won 6-0, 6-2.

Tough encounter

Ashwin Nambi of Tamil Nadu beat 12th seed Rubal Shandilya of Delhi 6-7(8), 7-5, 7-6(2). Both fought hard throughout the match. Rubal had his chance when he served at 6-5 in the third but the relentless Ashwin broke back. The tie-break was the only one-sided period of play in the match, with Ashwin winning it 7-2.
